Question:
My girlfriend has a rust hole in the firewall of her 1992 sunfire. When ever it rains or snow melts off of the windshield the water runs through and onto the floor on the inside and the carpet. During a good rain it gets pretty wet in their.
My question is, what is the best way to fill the hole to stop the leak. I would prefer to do this on my own and i do not own a welder. Is expanding foam ok?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

When you get a "plug" put in to fix a flat tire. Is that a good way to fix a flat? Do plugs last?

How about using some of that convenient two part epoxy?Theres a type that comes in a roll that you cut to size then knead till its of uniform color. Then you've maybe five minutes working time before it hardens. After hardening, it readily sands down, shapes and paints. Name like Epoxy Weld or Plastic Weld or somethin...
I'd think expanding foam'd be too porous...
I've had good luck with the plasticweld stuff on numerous occasions-and its only 5-8 bucks for a small tube.
Try that-it'll prolly work just fine.
Good luck!
silicon caulk
I would use a heavy piece of plastic and crazy glue. Clean the area around the rust of all dirt to make sure the crazy glue can get a good bond, and then just make sure to glue it down well.

Who cares if the patch looks great? The car is 15 years old and not worth the effort. And who the heck sees INSIDE the engine compartment anyway!

The expanding foam you refer to would work great. Will your car's alternator still work even though it need's to be replaced?
If you are able to get to the hole easily, I have used roofing tar. The paste type. You may need a piece of metal a little bit bigger than the hole, put the tar on both sides of the metal. Put that over the hole, take some more of the tar and smooth it out. The paste will harden in a day or so. Worked for me.Removing Paint Scuff on my Bumper?
Expanding foam might work, for a time. But the truth is that this car is probably going to keep rusting out and might even have damage to the steering rack mounts. This car is probably due for retirement as this rusting isn't going to stop. After ten years, most are in this category. How much does it cost to repair/replace a transmission?
