Brake Pads Replacement?

Question:
About 15 months ago, I took my car to Midas and got new pads and rotors. Cost about $800. Recently, the brakes started squeaking, and now grinding. I'm taking my car to a tire/brake shop tomorrow. What can I expect? I know it's not my rotors, as there is NO vibration or shaking whatsoever. So, when the mechanic comes back and says that all of the pads and rotors need to be replaced, can I tell him he is an idiot? Can't they rotate rotors, and just replace the pads? Should this just be the front, or all 4? Any estimate on how much this will cost?

My car defrost air stays cold unless I race the engine, or after I start moving. Help, what is wrong?

It's a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. Manual Transmission. Low mileage.

Do the tire pressure increase when you drive on the freeway and why?thanks?

Yeah, I'd go back to Midas and tell them to check it. If you ride your brakes a lot, which I wouldn't imagine with a manual trans, they get worn down quickly. Other than that, I think it would be a different problem. The actual parts would only cost you about $50 per wheel if you just bought the parts at Auto zone or somewhere like that. Then you have to do all of the work yourself, or find somebody to do it.

If your squeaking turned into grinding, I would say a loss of pad material is causing the metal part of one the pads to rub against the rotor. I would estimate they are going to want to replace all of the parts for the wheel with the grinding, or at least $200.00. If you can, let them look at it, get an estimate, then go to a couple of other places and get estimates before you have any work done.

Why is the steering on my car so hard (it's really tight)?

Well rotars are very cheap nowdays and alot of places don't even bother turning them(rotate).Just because you had pads put on last year doesn't mean that one of your calipers isn't sticking and prematurely wearing them down. But you should have a warranty on the breaks so I would take it back to them to fix.By the way those people work on commision!800 dollars is a huge amount for brakes,I am sure you had alot done for that price.I think that they eaither messed something up or something odd happened to your braking system.

will low trans fluid make the check engine light come on? it did it this morning when I started the car?

take it back to Midas and tell them,it should be under warranty

How much does it cost to get a car resprayed?

i own a repair shop, and didn't you get a life time warranty with that brake job,you was supposed to for that price,,you got like the supreme brake job,,and it don't cost 800 bucks to do all 4 wheels of the brakes either,,their too high on there labor and parts,,you can turn the rotors,,if there not eaten in to,real bad,,and just replace the pads..i don't see how they keep getting away with charging this much, anyway see if you have the receipt,,this might get them repaired for you for free,,good luck hope this help,s.

What is the best way to clean the insides of a gas engine?

midas sucks. you should only turn the rotors once and then they should be good for a while. the pads do wear down, but not as fast as you mentioned.

Some Nob Jockey has scratched my car with a Key, wots the best way of repairing the scratch?

if there may not have been anything wrong with the pads and rotors, you might have some kind of hydraulic pressure problem. your master cylinder, power brake, brake lines, or your foot may be causing you to apply too much or uneven pressure all around. i'll say it again, midas sucks. if you have the invoice from them, try to show it to them and make a complaint. those guys have so much damn work to do that they don't pay as much attention to detail as the local shops.

How can you prevent cars from rusting?

If they replaced the pads and rotors only 15 months ago, they should not need to be replaced again unless you have put on some serious miles. If they somehow screwed them up, then you may have problems. If the mechanic tells you that you need to replace all of the pads and rotors, contact the place where you had your rotors and pads put on in the first place. Many manufacturers guarantee their pads and rotors for a certain number of miles, and if you haven't exceeded those miles then they can be replaced for free.

My turn signals buzz when I turn them on??

Depending on how much you drive pads should last about 15 to 18 months. but alot of shops wont rotate rotors or do a brake job if they cant "cut" the rotors. Then you have to replace your rotors every couple of years or so.
Rear brakes drums last much longer and only need to be replaced if worn out.
If your brakes wear out any sooner than that, You might have suspension problems with the shocks or springs ball joints etc....

i have a question regarding the benefits regarding a three angle valve job?

$800 ?? boy did you get ripped. I wouldn't go to Midas on a bet. I hope that was for all 4 wheels ?? Sounds to me like they didn't inspct your calipers and the pistons aren't retracting. This makes the pads constantly drag on the rotors and ruin them. Midas (if you listen to their ads carefully) guarantees your PADS for life, they don't say a thing about installation. You get burned no matter what. You could have just one caliper doing all the noise, keep your fingers crossed and stay away from the big name boys.

Vehicle runs fine for 5 min, but when engine gets warm, there is moderate surging, when stopped engine dies?

well, if you're hard on your brakes all the time then you might have to change the pads every year. Your rotors should still be fine. Also, if you go to your local parts store (ie AutoZone, Bumper to Bumper, or Napa) They sell Brake pads that usually come with lifetime warranties. You could buy your parts and get a discount on your bill. If you know someone or are willing to learn yourself, it is not hard to do yourself. Midas is probably one of the most expensive places to go. $800...? Wish I was your mechanic.
