MG Rover 400 registered 1998. why is steam coming from under the bonnet (right hand side near the windscreen).

The temperature gage is just below red, the fan is working, no leakage from the radiator however, the thin black tube from the water container is very hot (maybe from the steam)?

a17dy200 is nearer the answer, check your coolant level, if its low you got a leak, any oil in it then ya head gaskets gone but the rover does need a good cap or the water will get hotter quicker, sealed system raises the boiling point
