Question:
Thank you for answering my question about the problems I am having with my car. It seems like the most popular answer is to check the Speed Sensor.
Where is that exactly and is it something I can do myself?
Can someone explain in detail how I check to ensure the wires haven't unplugged somehow. Thanks so much.

The speed sensor that darrin b is referring to, is the WHEEL speed sensor. That is NOT the problem. Your problem is the VEHICLE speed sensor. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is located on the right side of the transaxle, near where the right side axle shaft connects to. To access this part is pretty tricky, if you are inexperienced. There is an aluminum foil covered shield around the wiring connector. You will need to remove the shield to gain access. You may even have a damaged wiring connector, that is causing the problem due to the close proximity of this part to the catalytic converter. If you want to purchase this part from the Ford dealer, ask the parts counterperson for the "basic" part number 9E731. If you require an illustration of what this part looks like, you can e-mail me. id say take it in to a shop and have them scan the abs computer... that will tell you which speed sensor is giving the bad reading... then replace that sensor. the speed sensor will look like a disk with notches out of it and theres a magnetic pickup to read the notches and tell the computer how fast that wheel is turningMore Questions & Answers ...
