in 97 they did not recommend synthetic in northstars. But you can if you want to waste your money. These engines take 8 quarts of oil at oil change and almost every northstar I see uses about 2-3 quarts of oil in 3-4k miles. Not sure where you get your oil changed but at my shops an 8 quart synthetic oil change is about $75 and if you need a quart every 1k miles I would charge $7 a quart. so it can be pretty costly. I would just use a good quality brand 10w30 oil. Any of the major brands would be fine.

i own a repair shop,and id run synthetic oil in it i know it has a few miles on it now,,and this would be a good time to change it over to synthetic oil,,a good 10-w-30 will work just fine in it,,this is probably the best oil on the market right now,and it last a longtime,,oil changes are only needed every 6-7000 miles instead of every 2-or3 thousand mile like with conventional oil,id try it,,i know you,ll like the way it does,,good luck hope this help,s.,happy new year.PS Mobil one is what i do recommend for it.

General Motors uses Mobil 1 full Synthetic in all Corvette and Northstar Engines. New motors run 5w-30 Being an older engine, I would run a 20w-50. I have used Mobil 1 in my Tahoe since I drove it off the dealer's lot back in 99.

Also you dont have to change Synthetic oil every 3000 miles like conventional oil. I change my oil every 7-8k miles. I know some have tested Synthetic upwards of 10-15k miles.
