How do I connect an AMMETER in my car?

Question:
I want to always know if my battery is charging or discharging!
I have the Ammeter, but lost the instructions. I am a very, very good mechanic, and home electrical repairman. So be as detailed as you wish in your explanation. I can find all things necessary, battery, fuse box, voltage regulator, alternator, etc.

You may not have an Autometer gauge, but they are all hooked up the same. Good luck from The Duck!

An ammeter needs to be connected in series with the 12v system. The same meter can measure voltage by being connected in parallel to the circuit.

connect a wire from your battery to the meter. connect a second wire from the meter to a ground source.

You have to place the ammeter in series between the battery and the load. The one thing you must avoid doing is putting the meter between the starter and the battery, you will burn up the meter if you do this. Take a look at the positive leads coming from the battery. You should see one very thick cable and one or more smaller ones. The thick one is of course the starter and you don’t want to mess with that. The others run to the load in the car. You need to trace these wires back to a splice; this is where you will insert the meter. If there is more then one, you will need to splice in the meter at or near the battery. Make sure you use wire gauge is at or greater then the size of the wires you’re splicing into. Remember the lower the gauge the thicker the wire. You should end up with a wire connected to the positive battery terminal and one connected to the rest of the car, excluding the starter. Be careful how you run the wires so that you don’t get any shorts, or allow metal parts of the car to cut through the insulation. To test it, start the car and the meter should show positive amperage, if not, turn off the car, reverse the wires on the back of the meter, and retest
