Whats Wrong With My Van?

I Have a 1999 Ford Winstar Mini Van For the past month the Check engine light has been on I Had it diagnost and found out that it was my O2 Censor. The Mechanic said that I didn't have to replace it right away. Today when I started my van it started up right away I let it warm up like 20 min then when I was driving the battery and abs light came on so I pulled over and shut it off to see if the lights would go off. Well it would'nt start, so I jumped it and drove home I let it run for about 1/2 hour and drove it again the lights are know off and it seems to be working without a problem. Do you think that this is just a fluke or is something wrong, (Maybe the cold it was 25 F this morning)

So, you have two problems, the O2 sensor, as the mechanic says, doesn't have to be changed right away, however it should, because you can get major drops in gas mileage from that... like 10 miles per gallon even... What it does is it tells the car how much fuel/oxygen to pump in... and if the car doesn't know, you will experience stalls, very low gas mileage, etc...

As for your ABS, your car probably has a seperate problem other than the O2 sensor, the reason why it didn't notice this earlier is because you weren't using it... Since it was cold today, you probably hit a small patch of ice, hit your breaks, and your ABS tried to work, when it didn't work, it noticed the failure and turned on the ABS light.

You should be able to fix the O2 sensor by yourself, they usually aren't too hard to get at, they're right on your exhaust system, it's usually one or two bolts, and you install it, may cost you 100 bucks... (WAIT to reset the computer after you install it, because when you go get your ABS looked at tell them to reset the light that was on because of the O2 sensor, will probably save you 50 bucks)

I'd start by finding a competent mechanic. Then have him scan the system to see what the error codes are, correct the problems and reset the light. If you have a trouble code for an O² sensor and you don't correct the problem, wrong signals will go into the computer causing your engine to run way too rich. The battery is probably a new problem. How long have you had the battery in the vehicle? You may need a new one. But do get the other problem fixed so you will have better drive-ability and fuel economy again.

O2 Censors are pretty easy to change, it may be in your best interest to change the both of them yourself. so much less costly, if you can unscrew a light bulb you can do this. you will find the O2 just below the exhaust manifold, just follow the pipes and you will see the O2 sticking out of the pipe with a wire attached. go and buy the O2 and you will see what your looking for under the van. some are so easy to get to and may need to just look under the van and others may be a bit harder to get to due to the placement, some times so close to the fire wall. as far as the van failing to start,, start off with the simple stuff,, like clean the battery post's real good. you can even go to the parts store and and use the scanner they have, they can even give you a print out of the diagnoses and let you know what they mean, this will save you big bucks. if you are not sure how to hook up the scanner the guys at the store will in most cases if they are not to busy come out and do it for you. if you go to a shop and like to gamble? well good luck but most of the time a person should be able to take care of the smaller things like O2's and save some big buck's brake's? the shop will most likely tell you that you need new calipers,, you will almost never need new calipers, it is so easy to clean them and repair them your self. I have heard from friends that they got hit up with 3-6 even 8 hundred bucks just to get thier brakes done,,
