We bought a used 1988 Volvo 760 Turbo six months ago an the alternator just burned out. When our mechanic?

took it off, he noticed that oil was leaking out of it, causing the alternator to burn out. They have given me the choice of doing nothing or going into the engine and trying to find out what the problem is. However, I only spent $2500 on the car. What do you think is the best option at this point?

interesting that they would use oil as a cause for a burned out altenator. Altenators generate a charge and do that best while they are clean. If they get oiled up, the charging ability is reduced (but burn up -not likely) Personally I would leave it. This is something that can be done at a later time and besides if it is oil, there are alot of products out there that will stop minor leaks by adding it to the oil.
When they fix the altenator, they should also check the regulator as well. You, need to have a good battery with clean connections.and everything will be good in that department. An old battery on its last legs will make your altenator work overtime and a faulty regulator will allow your altenator to overcharge its recommended amount causing it to burn out.
Again leave it.

How liable are auto mechanics for wrong inspections?

They should be able to tell you where the oil is coming from and give you an estimate BEFORE they start tearing it apart. If not, you need a new mechanic. If it is simply a gasket, fix it and be happy. If it is a $3000 repair, then you have to figure out what it is worth to you. If you choose not to fix the oil leak, you can still replace/rebuild the alternator, and drive it till it quits.
