They are a two stroke compression engine that detonates the fuel by compressing it not by igniting it ie a sparkplug.
therefore if you have enough of a hill or a decent towing vehicle you will get it going.
I have "crash" started an 18 tonne Izuzu 6ltr 180bhp truck with a 6bd1 engine being pulled by a john deere tractor when my battery was flat.
Reason: The battery only turns the starter motor whicj in turns only induces the compression of the fuel

Yes it is and I sometimes do this with my diesel Landrover. Put it in third or even fourth if the engine won't turn over and choose a good hill. Don't forget to turn the key to on or the steering will be locked

what do you mean by hill start, i have a diesel car and i also live on a hill, and i hill start it up hill everyday and its fine and really easy. by hill start i mean pulling away/driving off on a hill. i dont know of any other hill start.
