Question:
I've narrowed down my search for a new used car, to a 2004
Saturn Vue, white or silver. All the specs are satisfying except this nasty rumor that they aren't the easiest to maintain, and tend
to gravitate to the repair shop more than we would like.
Thanks for your input!

What does a SOHC and DOHC do?
My wife got into a very bad car wreck when I was away for army training in the summer of '04. She was suffering being injured and going through the legal rigamarole (cop ticketed her, apparently it was illegal to be stopped at a redlight and rear-ended by a truck doing 50 on that given day). She liked the no hassle at Saturn and they were the only people who weren't giving her a hardtime trying to buy a vehicle in my name without a power-of-attorney. She ended up buying a brand new 2004 Vue, silver, 3.5 liter engine. We have tabbed up close to 50k miles in less than three years and it has been great! About a year ago the check engine light came on and she took it to the dealer. Apparently the radiator was a teaspoon low on antifreeze, which of course they filled and sent her on her way. Other than that, not a hiccup! We change the oil more (every 3-5k) regularly then required by the manufacter (7k). It has awesome power, great gas mileage and is fun to drive. I know they made two engines for the Vue and I feel the smaller underpowers it, but if you don't need it who cares. I do the routine maintenance on it with no problem, and I am no mechanic. If you think you are getting a good deal, jump at the chance. It is fun, comfortable, speedy, safe and the most money we have spent on it was for a new tire. Saturn didn't tell us not to drive over 2 by 4's with nails in them, stupid me! Anyhow, we love ours and plan to drive it another 10 years.
How much would a head gasket cost to replace at a garage?
Edit: My sister bought a Saturn sedan the second year they made them (early 90's, I think) she drove the wheels off of it, more than 250k, and knowing her probably changed the oil once. She then bought a 2006 Vue. Step-sister has an '04, too and she likes it. Three siblings, three Vues and none of us speak to each other. Odd?

Is it possible to take gas out of your car?
Its not the most luxurious vehicle but i haven't had any trouble at all with it and I have 105,000 miles on it. I haven't taken very good care of it either. I have probably had it serviced maybe 2 or 4 times.
Termostat or fuel pump?
I've owned/own saturns. Basically they are throw away cars. Good for 150,000 miles or so then the problems start to show up one after the other. If thats all you expect no problem with them other then that. I drive many many miles so for me they work out. Run them till they die then walk away.
