I have converted virtually everything on my 1992 Mercedes to synthetic;engine, tranny, A/C pump, and power steering fluid.
Points in the distributor melt when turning key on?
I read one person who stated NOT to change the differential to synthetic, such as the 75W-90 I bought for my car.
Can anyone tell me a reason why/or why not I should do this?

Go ahead and use it, use the same weight range as it normally takes. If you are going to use the car for any "heavy duty use" you can go to a heavier weight. Synthetics are thinner when cold and thicken when temperatures increase. You will have less wear, better gas mil age(less friction), and cooler running rear end or transmission(manual shift). If you have a Posi-Trac type you will need to add the correct amount and type of friction modifier recommended for that differential.

Synthetic oil comes in whatever weight you want. There are always dimwits who spout baseless garbage like "It's thinner than regular oil and will slip into your combustion chamber" That makes no sense whatsoever. I've used synthetic in my differentials for over 30 years and have never had a problem. It protects better, lasts longer and holds up to extreme conditions better.Does it matter what material you use to replace a sagging headliner?
I am not sure how differential fluid can get into the combustion chamber, but anyhow. If the weight is the same, you shouldn't have a problem. I did run into gear noise on my Jeep when I went from conventional oil to synthetic (all I had on hand at the time). Synthetic does run faster than the conventional, so you may end up with gear noise (because the oil runs off too fast), but it won't hurt bearings. Also, if it is a limited slip of any kind, make sure you add the correct friction modifier, or you'll be replacing clutches (or the limited slip unit in some cars)!2002 ford taurus airbag light stays on!! synthetic is the best oil you can use including your rearend, it lubricates a lot better than regular oil and you will notice better gas mileage and better performance to boot.More Questions & Answers ...
