A question for the mechanic?

check your fuel lines of course but you may want to look into maybe changing your fuel pressure regulator it may be weak and be allowing more fuel to pass to the injectors .I had this problem myself with a DODGE. [check your fuel rail pressure with engine off with key on and then check the reading while running at idle] The required pressure specs will be in a repair manual on your car .

If a shop replaced the pump then take it back to them and tell them what you told us. I would imagine you would notice if they left something loose and you were losing gas. So that can't be the problem. 100 to 150 miles is quite a discrepancy. Something is wrong.

How can you tell if...?

I don't know why, but auto repair stores such as auto zone has stuff that you can put in your tank to help conserve gas. Just go in and tell them that your car is burning too much gas and they will direct you to a bottle that saves on gas. I'm not sure what its called, but I know I bought some when I got my car a tune up.

Check your fuel lines at the tank, you might have one that is loose.

There is no way a fuel pump replacement could cause your gas mileage to drop like that. There are a number of issues that could cause bad gas mileage but more information would be needed to advise correctly. On a 2002 vehicle, most of the items involved would turn your check engine light on. So if the light is on, have a diagnostic check done at a good repair shop. If the light isn't on, take a look at your maintence records and receipts. If you see recommended items that you havn't done, get those done first. You won't be wasting money, because the maintenance needs to be done anyway, and it might improve your gas mileage.

It might be that the pump is the wrong one, or there could be a leak. Another possibility is that they didn't seal something properly when the pump was changed. it's possible that the float was damaged when they replaced the pump and that it's using the same amount. The best way to check this is with your odometer. Fill the tank and reset the odometer to zero. Then drive the car for awhile. Take the number of miles driven and divide it by the gallons used. If you get about 17 to 19 miles to the gallon in the city, then your mileage is where it's supposed to be. The 3.4 V-6 isn't the most economical motor out there, and that old pump was probably not pumping enough gas before it failed.

My car failed smog because the NO was to high. Is this because the catylitic converter is shot?

I don't think your fuel pump would contribute really to your lost gas mileage your injectors pulse to let fuel into the combustion chamber. Your pump just pressurizes the line it shouldn't be able to create high enough pressure to drastically change it.

Look at your driving habits are you heavier on the accelerator. Does your car need a tune up their are many factors that can contribute to lost fuel economy. Check the lines going from tank all the way to the engine see if they are damaged.
