How secure can I be in purchasing a 96 Silverado with 159k miles?

A small amount of combustible fuel is injected into a combustion chamber, where it is ignited by a spark from the spark plug. The explosion drives a piston down very quickly, which turns the crankshaft. If you have an eight cylinder engine, this happens in a particular sequence in each of the eight chambers. The crankshaft turns a flywheel, which "evens out" the flow of the mechanical energy. This mechanical energy then is used to power a car, or some other vehicle.
There is more to it, but that is the fundamental way it works.
