Why does the 4WD low and 4WD high light flash insinc on my 1998 Ford Explorer?

There are a set of sensor switches on the side of the transfer case that tell the 4WD shift computer what position the gears are in. They go bad a lot and give conflicting readings. The computer should know something is wrong and keep the case in 2WD until it's fixed. The switches are very easy to get off and check or replace.

Well I'm not positive but this may help does your explorer pull hard to one side when turning any funny whinning noises coming from the front end of truck and when is the last time you used the 4 wheel drive it may be a flash code for service on Transfer case differential and front axel..
