Try the plastic T-piece that joins three vacuum hoses that sits just under the EDIS unit on the engine. This falls apart, you lose vacuum, and the engine won't idle. The dealers are all well aware of the problem, and all will know what a 't-piece' isCheck And Adjust The Valve Clearance

Check the plugs for whats called corona ringing this is a deposite that can affect the performance of the plug, in the zetec head there is some hexagonal core plugs in the head which leak and allow oil in to the area where the plugs are sat this atomizes and gets an electrical charge, take the plug out and check them on the insulator if thats discoloured you can clean them and the leads with traffic film remover and then dry them
Had an fiesta xr2 with a zetec engine that would cut out on junctions, not all the time but enough to be annoying, it was under warranty so they did all the things suggested on this page but no joy, so tried the owners club who said that the zetec engine was prone to sticking valves due to cheap mineral oil , so I used an engine flush and filled up on a good quality fully synthetic oil and the problem was solved, could be worth doing to eliminate this possibility.

1) problem must be occurring when they look (that was my problem it was showing ok when they checked and only happened out on the road)
if you take a muffler off of a small 2 stroke motor, will it effect the motor at all?

It depends if it wont idle at all or cuts out some of the time, if it is doing it all the time I would say yes take it to a garage as most causes are quick and easy to find and fix, and any decent garage should be able to tell you what the problem is straight away, hope this helps a bit.
