No my friend. Yes there are aftermarket air assisted shocks that are connected to a tire valve sort of arrangement, usually hid behind the license plate, gas filler door or where ever it can be out of the way. Your 86 Cadillac has an electric air pump down in the front of the front fender, drivers side. There is a sensor connectiog the body to suspension on the rear. When the distance becomes to short between the two the sensor turns the compressor onn and inflates the shocks to bring the body up to the correct level . When you first start the car or add extra weight you will see a green light come on with the words "car is leveling" or any time when you are driving and the compressor starts up that light on the dash will illuminate.

The answer is in your question, unless you had them replaced. It's all controlled by a component under the hood or under the rear of the car. You can hear it running with a system that works.
