First and foremost , try to take a very close look at the engine oil filler cup if in fact has any milky color- If so, you should suspect the problem with the head gasket. Also check your ignition timing if so advanced before I go far with any costly remedies

Be sure that the entire cooling system is full with the proper coolant..
You should check the fan if it turns on when the the engine temperature reaches to level where the fan should turns on(while the engine is idling)
If the fan turn on at normal temperature. YOU SHOULD PURSUE WITH THE NEXT STEPS
First , I would take care of the radiator( try to remove it out of the car and send it to radiator shop and let them flush and clean it)
Replace that water thermostat with the original one.( Honda part with a relief valve onto it)
Replace the thermo fan switch if the fan would not behave properly.
You should bleed the cooling system before you star your car.
If all the above don,t help;you have to run a combustion test LEAK( to see if the exhaust gas sneaking into the cooling system( due to lack of cleaning and tightening the head bolt properly or poor quality machine shop or other related negligence aspects before the problem reaches to this far.)
If this test turns out negative then you should suspect the the water pump blades are bent or it,s propeller turns freely around it,s shaft.
Some mechanics out there they don,t even realize how very essential to flush to engine block while the cylinder head is out of the engine .
Note: I PERSONALLY DID OVER 30 CYLINDER HEAD JOBS when I WAS A MECHANIC none of all these jobs had a single problem.
See if the thermostat is opening all the way.
To test the fans, switch the AC to Max, that will turn the fans on if they are not on already.

i own a repair shop and yes it can still be that, if someone didn't do there job all that good it can still have problems with the head gasket on it,also the thermostat may be bad in it,even if you put a new one in,it can still be bad,i put 4 on one car the other day and all 4 came from the same place, and all was bad,i finally changed parts stores and got a good one,but just because you think it was repaired right ,doesn't always mean it was,, i get them all the time that other people was supposed to fix them, but didn't,so keep this in mind,it can still have head problems, good luck hope this helps.Which brand of spark plugs should I buy for my 2002 GMC Sierra truck?

WELL IN EXTREME CASES YOU COULD LOOK AT THE HEAD GASKET, BUT MOST COMMONLY, IF THE THERMOSTAT IS GOOD AND THE FANS WORK YOU MOST LIKELY JUST HAVE TO PURGE THE COOLING SYSTEM. THERE MAY STILL BE AN AIR POCKET IN THE SYSTEM.... IF NOT YOU COULD HAVE PROBLEMS RANGING FROM A WATER PUMP, (TIMING BELT DRIVEN?) HEAD BREACH, ALL KINDS OF THINGS. IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO A FEW SERVICE SHOPS, AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR GETTING SCREWED, TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. PAY THE HIGHER PRICE BUT GET THE HONEST ANSWER.Are steel-toe boots really safer?
The first thing that I would do is to go back to the shop that changed the head gasket and explain what is happening. Having been the last ones to have done the head gasket repair, they should do a free inspection of your engine in the aea that they worked on, the head gasket. What you need is a compression test of the engine to rule out a blown head gasket. Next, if the compression test shows good, then you want to have a cooling system diagnostic done. The thermostat operation should be checked first. To do this, operate the engine, when it reaches operating temperature, about halfway or less on the temp gage if equipped, you should hear the fans come on and warm air blowing across the engine. If the fans come on and only cold air blows across the engine, the thermostat is not opening up and needs replaced. If the fans come on, and no air is blowing from them, then it is possible for someone to have wired the fans backwards. This is rare but can happen. The fans would blow air out past the radiator toward the front of the car instead of air blowing across the engine. If this all checks out, see if your water pump is actually pumping water (circulating the coolant). You would want an experienced mechanic to remove the radiator cap/surge tank cap while the engine is at operating temperature to see if water is circulating. If water is not circulating and the thermostat is checking out good, then either you have a huge air pocket in the cooling system or the water pump is not circulating the water. If all of this checks out good, then the last place is the radiator itself, it could have a clogged core. A radiator shop can rod the radiator and free any blockage from the radiator core. This is a lot to do, but cooling system troubleshooting is not an easy tasks. But, once again, I would start with the last shop that worked on the head gasket. They should inspect the work that they already had done.Whats the best caravan body filler for a hole on the side of my tourer caravan?

the thermostat is probably stuck... part is about 10 dollars so id just replace it... theyre supposed to be replaced every 2-3 years anyways but no one bothers until they have problems. you could have corrosion in your radiator too, so id get the cooling system flushed, or if you have access to a place with a garden hose pick up a bottle of radiator flush, run it the way it says on the bottle... then open the valve at the bottom of the radiator and use a garden hose to flush all the coolant out until it runs clear, then let half the water drain out and fill the system back up with straight coolantMore Questions & Answers ...
