i just bought a 1990 toyota corolla and one of its problems is that it doesnt want to start when its been sitting for a while. this has nothing to do with the weather, as when its 80 f outside it still wont start as long as its sat for about 6 hours. anyways, i always starts, but it takes work. i found that if you hold the key to start the engine does turn over, but does not start. if you pupmp the gas while doing so, it helps. recently i have tried to hold the key for about 5 sec. stop. wait for a second or two. then, on the second turn it starts right up. me confused. i dont know what it if. i have a major tune up: distributor, rotor, spark plugs, wires, oil change, tranny fluch, radiator flush, all the stuff. so the car likes me, it just wont start right away. i even put a fuel injector cleaner in it. the other issue, which may be related, is that the car seems to smell like gas when starting and burns gas. the mpg should be 35 and its 19. help!

your description points to carburetor leaking from a gasket. this could be a small leak and when car sits for a while then fuel pump has to refill carburetor fuel bowl before fuel starts going into engine. this would also explain decrease in mpg and gas smell. you could buy a carb rebuild kit or take it to a good honest mechanic.Installing a 700r4 in place of a 4l60e?
i own a repair shop and i think you need a fuel pump on it those were good for doing this,also the filters on those will stop up real easy and cause the exact same thing to happen,try the filter first,and then if that don't help it have the fuel pump pressure checked on it,and see if that don't help it,i have replaced a lot of pumps on those before ,good luck with it i hope this helps.http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...
