I have heard it is suggested to change it every 3 months or 3000 miles and I am curious if it is really neccesary to do it that often? Thanks for your advice.

Yes, you do need to change it every 3,000 miles. I remember my father telling me years ago that it used to be like 9,000 mi or something. lol. The reason you need to change the oil every 3,000 is because the "Viscosity" of the oil. Meaning it BREAKS down after prolonged use. When you first put oil into the engine after an oil change, the oil is a thick and light gold color. After a couple of thousand miles the oil becomes a lot less thick and your pistons don't have as much "Cushion" or "Support" as fresh oil has. For example, 2% milk in comparison to Butter Milk. lol. If you do a lot of stop and go driving then you need to change it more often 2500-3000 miles. If most of the driving is on the highway you could get away with every 3 months. The best way to be sure is to check your oil regularly. If you check in once a week you will be able to tell when it starts to turn darker in color. Then you could calculate what was best for you.no its not. i change it every five thousand or so miles, but it also depends on the condition of your engine if its an older engine 100k miles or more it will break down faster than a newer engine, you can tell what condition your oil is in simply by pulling out the dip stick and if it is still clear your good but if it is black as coffee you need an oil change

it all depends on the nature of your, driving. is it normal driving, maintaining speeds of 55 to 65 mph, with out stopping, no ac, nothing in the trunk, or is it severe driving, around town, grocery shopping, dropping the kids off at school, sitting in traffic for 30 minutes, just waiting to get home. typicaly. normal driving, which is very rare, can go 5000 miles, but every one else can usualy only go 3000 miles or less ( three months figure that one out)

It depends on how much you drive it. If it is a daily driver, change it at 3000. If it sits a lot, for instance; I have a truck that may be driven 1000 miles a year.( Yes; Year) In a case similar to this you can wait 6 months but I would never wait longer because of the condensation (water) that collects in the oil pan.
