Question:
I am tempted to learn how to replace it myself, but that's always daunting... the alternator part for my car off Kragen.com says it's anywhere from $140 - $170 which is fine, but $400 in labor costs doesn't sound right to me... I live in Marin County, in NorCal (just north of San Francisco). Can anyone please help?? THANK YOU!

dont listen to the moron calling the other guy a moron, hes a moron too. 50 bucks is extremely low labor to install this, as most shops are at least 65 an hour for labor. some are as high as 90, depending on where you live. 560 does sound a little high, but keep this in mind:- on some hondas, the cv shaft must be removed to replace the alternator, resulting in more labor. is this the case? find out.
- is the belt wasted? that may be included in your estimate, and other belts may have to be removed. (more labor)
- you will not find an alternator at a shop for the same price as online, as you will not find a meal at a restaurant for the same price that you could cook it. its called business. you can go buy the ingredients, but for a chef to cook it, its gonna cost more.
- ok, hes not a complete moron, i wouldnt recommend a junkyard alternator either
- you are probably paying for at least some diagnostic time also,(a little) after all, the mechanic (not parts guy, theres a difference, expect to pay a professional, hopefully your dealing with one) actually tested it, rather than the old" well, the headlights look dim..etc." tests your going to find from the people in here
- and also, that "discount" that you get for your old alternator, its called a core charge. its a charge (not a discount) you pay for NOT giving back your part for them to rebuild, and its not given by the shops, its the part houses. you dont have to pay it if you/ they can give the old part back to the manufacturer. go buy one, and youll see.
this should give you the info you need to find out if your bieng had. try calling a few other shops, and ask for a ballpark, if this is a higher labor job, etc. like said, it does sound high, but maybe not. a few phone calls should fix you right up. good luck.
Who will win an eighth mile? Hyundai Sonata 4 CYL or Honda Civic Stock?
That sounds a bit high. Was this quote from a dealership? Because they are notorious for charging way higher than you average run of the mill auto garage.what kind of oil do most diesel trucks take?
Most garages will be able to trade in your broken alternator (to be rebuilt) then put that towards the purchase of a new unit. Over all about $100 - $140.
I am in the process of purchasing a vehicle ,1967 Dodge need a long block overhauL WHAT IS THAT?
The labor rates are set by a book most garages use, so ask to see it in writing. This is NOT a big job and you should only be charged a 1 1/2 - 2 hours tops.
how should clutch feel after replacement?
Shop around and stay away from the dealerships!! This repair should cost you no more than $250 maybe $300.
go to a junk yard parts are half price also take a man with you us men like to take advantage of women with money.specially blondes...........lol
Removing front door windows on 2000 F150?
Thats way too much. It shouldn't cost more than 50 bucks to have it installed. It is a real simple do it yourself job. A repair manual for your car from Autozone will tell you how to do it.Lost a wheel cover, is it dangerous to drive the car?
- Don't listen to the moron ablove me. Buying a used alternator is about the dumbest thing you could do.
What's the difference between Premium and unleaded gasoline?
- Yeah don't listen to me either b/c the other guy would rather you pay more then what the work is worth. I'm no professional mechanic and I can change out an alternator in a matter of minutes. I have paid to have it done before and it cost me 50 somthing dollars for the labor. If paying more than that maeks you feel better then go ahead and waste your money. Maybe the mechanic will really tighten those two bolts it takes to get the thing on and off.
