I have a '95 Cadillac Seville (it has four-wheel disc brakes). It makes a high-pitched warning sound when the car is moving and then the sound stops when I step on the brakes. Sometime it is the other way around and I hear the sound when I step on the brakes.

the sound your hearing is most likely coming from a small metal tab thats built onto the brake pads that rub against the brake rotor ( Disc ) that lets you kno when the brake pads are worn to the point of needing to be replaced.What you will need to have done is have the brake pads replaced and the brake rotors ( Disc`s ) turned, which means that they need to be put on a lathe and smoothened.there is a possibility that with the age of the vehicle the brake Disc`s ( one or more ) could also be worn out and need replacing. if thats the case i suggest you call around and price them for yourself because they will charge more for them at a shop usually. i hope this info helps....have mercedes G_wagon but engine and gearbox broken. anyone advise an alternative replace?
P.S. Linings,pads, shoes, all mean the same thing only differnt styles of brakes.

Pads. And they will probably make you smooth your rotors which really doesn't matter & costs $$. They say it makes the pads wear evenly. My grandfather was a mechanic his whole life and he said that you can live without it. And don't get the lifetime brake pads either - there is no such thing.you have what is called a glaze on your rotors and they need to be recut and it maybe your brake pads that have the glaze on them This is when either the rotors or the brake pads have a shine on them it can be straightened out by just sanding them with sand paper just to scratch them up a little not to much sanding at all

i own a repair shop,and probably what your hearing is the brake warning squealers making the noise,,this means its down to the wear out point of the brake pads ,,they,ll need replaced and also you,ll probably need the rotors turned also,,id say they need it,,but this is what your hearing,,,there worn down to the point that they don't have long left to go,id have them checked as soon as i could,,good luck,hope this help,s,,have a good x-mas.my check engin lite flashed 50 times than stayed on?

Usually it just the Pads need replaced. Look at your Brake Fluid Reservoir as the fluid level drops with Pad wear, if, there no leaks.What your are hearing is the brake pad wear sensors touching the rotor surface.

You may need the rotors resurfaced or replaced. You will need new disc brake pads .
Most likely, just brake pads ("linings" are a part of the pad, but it's rare to swap the linings without the rest of the pads). There are a few cases where you may need new rotors too, but this is not likely unless you feel the brake pedal pulsating.
