How much Does it cost to put in a new/used water pump into a 97 olds underachieva ? and Why ?

According to the dealer ship, my water pump is leaking and it will cost about 900 to fix. is that price low, high or about right ? I don't mind going to a small business mechanic, only reason I was at the dealer ship was because I was having an electrical problem with my Passlock System.

That is a very high price. You should find a small shop around. Should cost a lot less or a firend to help and for the cost the water pump and a little something else it will be fixed. Ask around you should be able to find a shop that someone else had luck with.

Well, actually, that price at a dealership may not be too far out of range. It is on the high side, but the job calls for 5.9 labor hours. There are a few gaskets involved, since you have to remove the exhaust manifold, front timing chain cover. The water pump is driven by the timing chain. These are actually a bear to replace. Just make sure they are using a NEW water pump, and get the warranty for the parts in WRITING, because if it was to fail agin shortly, that would suck to have to pay again for the same job.
