What would a 8.5" 10 bolt differential be?

Question:
I have an 83 chevy silverado with a 350/290HP engine, a 700R4 tranny, and 3.08 gears rear end and it is a 8.5" 10-bolt, and I don't know what type of differential it is...I don't know if it is limited slip, positrac, locker(doubtful), etc. I just need to know what type, if any, is it so I can research what I need to buy to make it limited slip with 3.45 gears and put new guts in the rear end.

That 8.5 inch is an open diff. There are a couple of ways to do this, depending on what you are using it for. The cheapest way to make that carrier a locker is with an EZ Locker, sold under many name brands, but the gist of it is that you simply remove the differential pin and the "spider" gears, and install the kit in your carrier. The side cups have trapazoidal teeth that engage under spring pressure. Under load, they will remain locked, coasting around a turn, they will slip. When they slip, they make a clicking noise. The down side is, it will cause your truck to "push", meaning you will have to turn the wheel further to make a turn, and your front tires will wear faster, since the rear end will try to push the truck straight, and will cause the front tires to scrub. I have one of these in my Toyota. Not so good in snow, great on dirt roads (I live in the Georgia mountains).

A clutch type limited slip is much more streetable, easily the best one out there is the Eaton Locker. It has a governor gear that uses flyweights to put pressure on the clutches. This is a carrier assembly that you mount the ring gear on to. The up side is there are no negative side effects like with a trapazoidal type. There are other clutch or cone type slippers, but they are not as selective as the Eaton. These have some of the same side effects of the trapazoidal, such as tire wear and push, but no clicking. The Eaton is normally open, only locking when there is wheel spin. And engagement is smooth, you won't feel it engage, this is the type GM uses in newer trucks.

My car starts, then eventually stalls...then it won't start again 'til next day?

Then there is the spool. Also a carrier assembly, this is by far the most agressive and durable. Not recommended for a daily road use truck unless you are drag racing. If you are looking to tow, or just looking for better traction without excessive tire wear or binding, go with the limited slip. I highly recommend the Eaton.

What is 11 rpm in mph?

More than likely it's a one wheel peel. You'll need to get a new locker, ring and pinion gears, and c-clip eliminators (don't skip this one especially if you are using a locker). Try jeggs.com or summitracing.com, they are my favorites.

lift both rear wheels off the ground, turn one wheel (in neutral)...if one wheel turns one way, and the other doesn't turn/turns in the opposite direction, it's conventional differential.

I have a 25 year old car; and the dashboard is cracked, parched and discolored from the sun.?

To "make it" limited slip, you'll need the whole "carrier assembly", the whole center "guts" of it, and a new pinion gear/ring gear and seals , if you are changing "ratio"...

Don't forget a new speedometer gear, as you are changing the "final drive ratio" as well...but it may only be two or three mph difference there.
