Question:
put timing marks as close as possible ,tightened everything back up ,tried to start got knocking noise from motor . Engine is a 2.3 and should have clearance on valves when timing belt broke , any suggestions.
Answers:
My car has been been keyed. What can I do?
Was the belt properly tensioned before closing everything up? If not belt could have jumped. If you can remove the cover to view the belt and cam pulley put the #1 piston on TDC. Check your repair manual (hopefully you had one before attempting this) and see if the marks are where they should be on TDC. If they are then check to see if the rotor in the distributor cap is pointing to the wire going to the #1 cylinder (if you had to pull it out). Make sure the wires are in the right order and everything like the distributor is plugged in and fuel pump working. It's also possible that if the belt broke on you you may have damaged some valves, I don't know of many non interference engines.
What do you mean by "timing marks as close as possible"? I had a friend who loved to think he knew what he was doing, this sounds like it may be an interferrence engine (valves and piston share space at different times) If you have them even a little off, you may be tapping your valves.
