Question:
If you try to start your car, and the key won't turn in the switch, what could it be? Is it the starter or something? Is this expensive to fix?

If the key won't turn, something is wrong with the lock cylinder. Generally this is a problem with older vehicles - parts just wear out. The key could be worn to the degree it won't operate the lock tumblers correctly.I took my 01 mustang to the shop and this is what they said about K&N fliters?
It could also be binding the shift/key interlock - again from worn parts.
Shouldn't be too expensive to fix, but depends on what exactly is wrong of course. Most vehicles have a common set of normal wearing items, so unless its ultra rare or ultra old, it shouldn't be any problems to obtain reasonably priced parts for it.

If you do have to get the ignition switch replaced, be sure to inspect the entire steering column before you leave the place of repair as they are not easy to put back together and mechanics tend to do a "good 'nuff" job if they can get away with it.

If the key won't turn, it's probably not the starter, but rather the switch (are you sure you're using the right key?). If you're using the ignition key, then it will have to go to a shop to have the switch replaced and a new key will be provided for you. It should be about a hundred dollars more or less, depending upon who does the work (dealer, mechanic, or locksmith).
if your key won't turn in the switch try turning the steering wheel while turning the key. I've noticed alot of cars and trucks kinda get stuck if the wheels are turned just right when the key is shut off and it puts excess pressure on the lock mechanisim and prevents the key from turning the switch.
If this isn't it you either have a bad key or a bad switch.
this sure sounds like the tumblers in the ingnition switch are messed up. it won't cost too much if you just ask around and find out who has experience on this kinda thing. don't take it to a guy that does't know anything about the electrical systems.. and if it's a ford, take it to a ford place and a chevy,a chevy place.. or if you know a very good indepent ,with a good reputation. they have to remove the tumblers in the switch, and you will probably have to put in different assembly, and it comes with a different key.
