Question:
I have a friend who is willing to let me have his 89 Dodge Van. It's a full size conversion Van. I like it. It's in decent condition.
Ford Explorer fan belt repair?
But, the van has been sitting for several years. I don't know exactly how long it has been, but I believe it has been sitting for about 4 years now. Does sitting for long periods of time cause damage to an engine?
I have a 1986 dodge aries.. my car runs like crap but on the dash bord when the power loss light
I think it needs a new battery. What else may the Van need? Will it need a new tune up, or what? I know it's difficult to say, because you don't know (nor do I) the condition of the van's motor. But assuming that the van was running well when he parked it (he said it ran fine when it was parked), what all might I need to do to get the van running well again?
After months have passed, what sort of things may I expect to have to replace on the engine?
Starter filter location ?..need help :)?
I presume that I will probably need to replace, say, the spark plugs, change the oil and filter, and maybe a couple of other minor things. Is this probably a safe presumption?

Four years is a long time. A few things:

1) If it had any gas in the tank, you need to swap it with new gas because old fuel just won't work anymore.

2) Change your filters
3) One thing to watch out of is moisture, which can build up in the engine AND CAN CAUSE RUST, which is very, very bad

4) Break discs should be kind of rusty, though starting/stopping should take care of it if it is only minor. This is normal.
5) If the van was stored in a colder climate check the hoses because there's a possibility that they cracked due to freezing.

6) Over time, lubricant looses it's viscosity, so you you'll need to change your oil.

7) Moisture can get trapped in the fuel system and it's not a good thing. There are additives you can use (I think it's called 'gas dry') to prevent damage.
What are the MOT requirements for a car in UK?
8) If it's been sitting on it's tires, check the tires, as they can get warped (since the force of the van has been applied to the same spot all this time) an the bottom can be damaged. If it's been sitting on blocks then it may be a good idea to check the suspension.
Outside side of that, you can check the minor things like spark plugs, pcv valve, sensors (O2/ABS though I doubt that applies to your van) for exposure, but if they're still good (I'm assuming you know how to tell whether they're bad) then it's fine to continue using them.

My car makes a zinging sound when I switch the overdrive button off on my car,but not always?
I would definitely do a tune up, as well as drain ALL the fluids and do a complete change on them as well. Not only will they be broken down but oils get sludgy, gas will get debris and rust from the tank, etc. probably have to replace battery...plugs, rotor and cap, check the fittings, and all rubber hoses. How to get scratches off car? damaged from using a kitchen sponge?
first thing i would as soon as i got it running would be change the oil and filter.you better check the undercarriage, sitting like that for that long, the brake and gas lines could be getting pretty bad.i would change the anti-freeze and thermostat and do a good tune-up on it.also check and see how much body work needs done. Why does the battery in my Honda CB125 die so easily?

It's not going to do any major damage to the engine if you do some things before you even try to start it. I'v seen a car sit for 20 years and fire right up. if it has been sitting for a few years i would drain the gas tank the best you can. Change the Oil Filter and Fuel Filter. You may need to change the plugs cap rotor if it runs poorly.Probably a TBI 318, great start, I put over 200k m iles on a couple of them and no sign of tiring. Give it a good tune up with mopar parts and change the oil and filt like mentioned already.
