Question:
It doesn't do it all the time, but it does it mostly when I'm on the freeway. Also, when I turn my car off, I smell a burning smell. Should I check my transmission fluid?

How do you replace a battery in a 1996 Oldsmobile Aroura?
I agree, having your transmission fluid and filter changed is a must to keeping your car shifting properly. I had a car once that done that and as soon as I had the fluid and filter changed it never done again. Especially if you car has alot of miles on it. Take your transmission dipstick out and smell the fluid on the end of it. It should not smell burnt and make sure it's not low. If you don't see any fluid on the stick, then you are in trouble; get at least 2 qts. in there as soon as possible and hope your transmission isn't already damaged. It sounds like your transmission is going bad.
You might also need your transmission fluid changed.
If you decide to get your transmission fluid changed, make sure that they DON'T do a flush (hook it up to a machine to change the fluid). That can destroy the transmission.
Tell them that you want the fluid changed by "dropping the pan" which means they take off the transmission fluid pan, and the fluid drains out, then they change the filter, put the pan back on, and fill it back up.
how do i get my car out of the shop?
Yes, you really should. The transmission fluid should be checked at least once a week, or more often if there is a known leak that has not been fixed. You might, and I stress MIGHT be in for an expensive repair if more fluid does not solve the problem. Running your car without checking the oil and transmission fluid on a regular basis is like neglecting taking care of yourself, don't eat, don't bathe, don't drink water, things that could make you very ill. Not keeping track of the vital fluids for the car can land it in the scrap pile, or in a repair shop that will eat up your money. Five minutes with the dip stick, a funnel, and the right kind of fluid will keep the repair shop away, barring a serious part failure that the fluids can't prevent.Power Steering on my 1997 Chevy Silverado problems ..?
