S means "spark ignition", the alternative being C for "compression ignition", or Diesel motors. The letter following the S is the standard or standards met. The higher the letter the better.

What kind of tire is needed for a Konig rim?

If you are looking to use one of the synthetics that doesn't carry an API rating, there are two reasons why they would do this. First, it costs a lot of money to have an oil certified. The fact that they aren't willing or able to spend that money is probably something to think about. But the other reason is that current API specs require low levels of the anti-wear additive ZDDP. It's being removed, because even in small quantities, it can poison catalytic converters. The new additive packages are more expensive, and so we come back to the question of why you would buy oil from a company that can't afford certification.

Go as far down the list as possible, eg. ST.

Where can i find the correct timing on a 4 cycle robin/subaru go-kart engine (10hp)?

those letters are what the oil companies have to use to meet the specs for a certain year vehicle. These spec change over the years due to emmision standards and mileage issues. When a new oil spec is made it is for the new year cars and also super-cedes all other oil specs. So if you buy new oil for any car and it has the starburst symbol on the bottle then you are good. But if you have some old oil in the garage that does not meet the specs of a new car you should not use it in the vehicle. here is an article I copy and pasted from http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/a...

Dear Tom and Ray:

Turbo diesel engine trouble, hard to start...?

Remember in the 1950s, a quart of oil would have API designations like MS, DG, etc? Now I see letters like SJ, SH and SG. Do these letters mean different breakdown temperatures or different additives or what? -- Bob

I always used the cheap am/pm gas unleaded for a year now, why wont my truck take it anymore without stalling?

Ray: Yes. The letters refer to a set of voluntary standards administered by the American Petroleum Institute (API). They cover various oil properties -- lubricity, breakdown temperature, particle suspension, etc.

I Really Need Help !?

Tom: Every so often, the API -- in consultation with the oil industry and car makers -- raises the standards. And when they do that, they assign the new standards a new set of letters.

What is the best and longest lasting air freshener for autos?

Ray: For gasoline engines, the first letter is always "S."

What do i have to do to make my 95 eclipse go faster it is a non turbo i want it to go fast but i dont want to

Tom: Wait a minute. Why is it "S" for "gas"? Wouldn't it make more sense to use "G" for "gas"? Am I missing something here?

I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado, I need a new catalytic converter to pass smog does anyone know...?

Ray: That's a closely held trade secret. Anyway, the second letter goes down the alphabet as the standards get more current. So "SA" was the first standard. Now, the current standard, introduced in 1996, is "SJ."

I have tried everything and it still wont start, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY?

Tom: And for diesel engines, the designations probably all start with "Q," right?

How much would it be to put a dual exhaust on a truck?

Ray: No, "C."

Ray: "CH-4" is the current diesel standard, having been introduced in 1998.

Why do gas pumps slow down when nearing the total (whe you pre-pay)?

Tom: The other question we get about these letters is: "Can I use an oil with an outdated standard in my car today?"

Where can i find a hood scoop with the 3 butterfly valves for under 200$, Or plans to make my own?

Ray: The question usually starts out: "I just found a bunch of 'SF' on sale for 13 cents a quart (or I just inherited a case of 'SF' from my late Uncle Marty). Is it OK to use it, even though today's standard is 'SJ'?"

How do I fix a moped carburetor?

Tom: And the answer is yes, it's fine as long as your owner's manual calls for a standard of "SF" and not something better. If it was good enough when the car was new, it's good enough now.

What was your first car?

Ray: But if your owner's manual specifies something more current (in this case "SH" or "SJ"), then use Uncle Marty's old oil in your lawnmower ... or on your salad.
