In my car the coolant resevoir plastic is very hot after driving (even after relatively short distances - engine at mid temp). Is this normal? It looks like a wet ceiling with beading cooland on the top of the resevoir.

yes cars use what it called a recovery system. as the coolant gets hotter the coolant expands and fluid from the radiator will dump into the reservoir and as the engine cools then recover it back. that is why the reservoir will have a hot and cold level marked on it. be sure not to overfill it or it will dump the excess out and make a mess.The water in the overflow will be the same temperature as what is in the radiator.
