The coolant is drawn in and out of the resevoir as needed. This is done when pressure opens the radiator cap, and expansion and contraction forces go to work.

How do i get the parking brake off on my 96 cadillac sedan deville?

yes cars use what it called a recovery system. as the coolant gets hotter the coolant expands and fluid from the radiator will dump into the reservoir and as the engine cools then recover it back. that is why the reservoir will have a hot and cold level marked on it. be sure not to overfill it or it will dump the excess out and make a mess.
