Question:
It's relatively low-mileage and has had regular check ups... :-) We've added some oil, and a little anti-freeze... but it still comes on just after running a few miles... we're afraid to get too far from home in it. Does anyone have any good ideas as to how to "fix" this problem (besides a new car!)? we love our astro... and have had very few problems with it... but this one has us baffled...

my car has 151 K on it. will it last 10 K more miles?
The check engine light means that there is a problem with one of the emission sensors on the vehicle. 1995 and newer vehicles are fitted with a OBD II ECM. That means a code scanner has to be plugged into the vehicle to pull the codes, and the "check engine" light can only be turned off with this tool. Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will not correct the problem, that will turn the light out for only a few miles. Autozone will do this for free, which is all well and good, but a reputable mechanic would be best for the job. It could be something as simple as a oxygen sensor. Commonly, it doesnt hurt to drive the vehicle with the light on, unless it is something that directly effects its performance.Well you didn't give your location so I am not sure what Auto Parts stores are near you. But some in my locale will lend you a device to plug into your car's computer. All you have to do is leave a deposit which is returned to you when you return the device. When you plug the device into your car, it will return some codes which you look up in the manual that comes with the device. This will give you a better idea of what may be wrong with your car.

The check engine light means that you have a problem with the fuel or ignition system on the vehicle. The best thing to do is to get the vehicle scanned to get the failure code read. Many auto parts stores have code readers. They will often do this for free. Of course, they do this in hopes of selling you a part. If the vehicle continues to run OK even after the light comes on, then chances are that it won't hurt to drive it for awhile.may engine is leaking at the top cover?
I would put money it's a misfire of somekind. thats what causes most check engine lights to turn on. Run a scanner at you local auto zone and see.i have a 92 Lincoln continental and i hear a ticking sound when i press the gas what could it be?
It doesn't actually mean "Check Engine", but rather "check the electronic control system for your engine". It has nothing to do with the mechanical portion. It could be an Oxygen sensor, loose gas cap, or any minor electronic device that is not giving the expected reading to the computer. As long as it's not misfiring or putting out black smoke it should be OK to drive it as long as you need to until you can get to a diagnostic center or dealership to have it fixed.2002 Chevy Venture overheating problems?
