Question:
I have a 98 Ford Taurus that won't start. It sounded like the battery at first because the engine would crank when I would turn the key. So I took care of the battery. Now it is just cranking faster. My guess it the fuel pump or fuel pump relay that is causing the problem because I pump the gas but it's having no effect, but I need to know how to fix it myself. Any ideas?

To see if its the fuel pump, you can take off the air cleaner and pour a little gas into the throttle body. BE SURE TO PUT THE AIR CLEANER BACK ON, because if it backfires, you can set your car on fire. If it acts like it wants to start, its firing some, then dies, then its the fuel pump (or you could be out of gas, or have a clogged fuel filter). My Max A.C. doesn't work on my V.W. Bug?
But, I agree, you should probably take it to a professional. Cars aren't easy to fix like they use to be.

On most newer vehicles with fuel injection, when you switch ignition ON the engine computer runs a fuel pump for a few seconds to pump initial gas pressure. You can hear it from the gas tank area - it's like a buzzing sound. It's not very loud and the gas pump works only for a second or two after switching the ignition ON, so you may need someone's assistance checking this. If there is no buzzing sound, something might be wrong with the fuel pump or its electrical circuit - bring your vehicle to the garage or a dealer.
CAUTION: Never try to fix or replace a fuel pump by yourself, it's located in the gas tank, and the car can catch a fire if not following certain precautions. Bring your car to a repair shop

It won't start because it's a ford taurus. Get a real car!i'd say go see a pro about it but if it won't start then idk what to do. Try getting someone to come get a look at it.
check the oil. it helps the engine run smooth. i had that problem once. it was a road trip and both the batterie died and the oil was black. the oil could be too low or be too dirty.

Does the motor have a coil? It sounds like a car problem I once had and it ended up needing a new coil.how far can u drive without a alternator belt?
pumping the gas will not have an effect on it unless it is carberated and i am pretty sure that a ford taurus is not carborated. (sp.?) could be the alternator. it was not the battery in the first place cuz if the battery was dead it would not crank, just make a click noise. so i think it may be the alternatorMore Questions & Answers ...
