Question:
I just bought a 2nd car, an older bucket that I'm going to be fixing up. They told me this when I bought it, and it did it this morning. When trying to start it, it turns over but as soon as I let go of the key, it cuts off. Than when I put it in neutral, it starts right up and is fine. Than I put it in drive to warm up, and all is well. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks

How do I unlock a 2001 F250 with a hanger?
Yes. It's probably because the transmission is connected to the engine when it's in park and when the engine tries to spin it is spinning the transmission with it, which tries to spin the wheels, but it can't because the brake is applied, so the engine stops.<<<talk about a run-on sentence. Anyway, when you put it in neutral, the engine disengages from the transmission allowing it to spin freely and start. I'm sure the last thing you did when you last drove it was change it to park from either drive or reverse and it did not disengage. It remained "stuck" and the only way to disconnect it was to put it in neutral. Then when you switch it from neutral to park, it does stay disengaged. The transmission should not be connected to the engine when you start it, I think you need a mechanic to fix the problem, unless you want to start it in neutral all the time...hope this helps :-)i dunno
What is the advantage for having "Quadracam" (4 camshaft) against DOHC or SOHC?
Could be the inhibitor switch on the trans is out of adjustment.it could be the transmission linkage cable needs adjusted or a relay not working you didnt say what type of car or year and model
Do i buy this car, mazda mx3, not sure about the oil??
A manual transmission car should only start in neutral or with the clutch pressed. What are good tires for both gravel and blacktop on my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse?
An automatic car should start in park or neutral. If it doesn't, there's a gadget called the "Park/Neutral safety switch" that's either on the shifter or on the transmission.
Although that symptom is a little weird, maybe there's a former car alarm or remote start interfering somehow.
Do you have Sears or does Sears have you.?
Lotsa luck... sounds annoying but simple.
it is a safety switch. it is either located in the tranny or in the shifting linkage.
You don't need to fix it. It is not a monumental effort to put the car in neutral from park just to start it. If you want to throw your money away on a '92, go right ahead.
Where can i find info on 1969 ford truck transmissions?
Look on the bright side; you have a free built-in theft deterrent. No thief is going to think of shifting your car into neutral if he can't start it in park.
