It is supposed to keep your traction under control by pulling away in a higher gear and therefore enabling the car to drive with more control and less slip. Frankly when I had a Vauxhall auto I fould it not much use and I could contron it better in snow with this device switched off

I do believe this is for driving off in icy conditions. It causes the car to stay in a higher gear, 3rd if I'm, not mistaken, and stops you from losing control as you pull off.
