I have fuel injector cleaner that im going to use for my car, and according to my dad, i should put it in the gas tank before i refill it and the instructions say to put it in after the tank is full. My dad told me the instructions are unreliable, but what do you think? Should I put it in before or after a full tank? I own a nissan frontier crew cab 2001 model btw...

Several comments, If you use quality gasoline (Chevron, Exxon, Shell etc.) constantly, there should be no need for a fuel injector cleaner as they already have additives to keep you fuel system clean.

If you feel you need a additional shot of cleaner, it really matters not whether you add it before or after as long as you add it to a full tank near the time of a fill up. The intent is for the concentrated mixture to be dispersed in a full tank of gas. Treating the system during the entire use of the tank of fuel. The petroleum distillates in the cleaner will mix with the tank of gas regardless of when you put it in as your tank is constantly in motion while you are driving down the road. The only consideration would be if you have an exceptionally large tank, you may need to add more than one bottle of cleaner. Refer to the instructions on the bottle.

You should put it in either right before you fill your tank, or right after you fill your tank. Do not put it in the vehicle and then drive around for a day or two and then fill it up. The injector cleaner is a concentrate. It probably says how many gallons of gas to mix it with on the bottle, it is usually like 15 to 20 gallons of gas. Once you have done this, run your tank down below a quarter of a tank. If you do this, it will do what it is suppose to do. If you fill your tank up again and again when it has only used a quarter of the gas mixture, you will over dilute the mixture, and it will not work as good. I hope this helps you.

Your dad is right, and so are the instructions. Your dad's concern is that the cleaner is well mixed with the gas. The manufacturer's concern is that you do not add the cleaner to a near empty tank with the engine running and cause damage to the engine (not likely, but a possibility).

Injectors are valves that only open a very tiny amount, less than the thickness of a hair. They either work or they don't. Cleaner solutions are worthless. Cleaners won't clean your valves or combustion chamber either. Run a gallon, or 100 gallons of cleaner through your engine and take it apart and it will still have plenty of carbon build up.

well, think about it: it's like drinking a glass of water to take a pill. are you going to put the pill in your mouth first and have the water flush it down, or are you going to drink the whole glass and have the pill leftover to swallow?

i would imagine that when you put the additive before you fill up, it would be less diluted and you get a more concentrated cleaner. if you put the additive after you fill up, it would be more diluted and the fuel system cleaning process would only be elongated.
