Maybe a ball joint on a Grand Marquis? Creaking when making left turns, even when pulling into park?

Question:
My 1999 Grand Marquis is suffering. When making a tight left turn, we hear a major creaking sound, even when not going very fast. We do not hear the sound when we are making a general intersection turn, only a k-turn, or into a parking spot, or something tight like that. Someone suggested it might be a ball joint, but I've also read that the ball joint might not need to be replaced, but only re-greased. Is this true? How do we know whether it is an upper or lower ball joint or whether it is the tie rod? We have a mechanic-type friend who is ready to help us, but he has limited time so I need to make sure I have the parts ready. We don't have money for a mechanic.

What could be wrong with my transmission?

The MOST COMMON cause of the sound you are describing on your particular vehicle, is usually caused by the steering knuckle rubbing on the lower control arm steering stop. The fix for this, is to simply apply liberal amounts of grease to the steering stop location, on the lower control arms. If the lower ball joints are the cause of your squeaking, they should be replaced. The cost of the lower ball joints from the Ford dealer, which includes lower ball joints for BOTH sides including fastening hardware, is $87.11US. The part number is F8AZ-3050-AA. Hope this helps.

Try the grease first, but if it continues I would relpace it. You would hate to be making a turn and it pop right out. I had this happen to me one time....not fun.

Changing a tire, but the lug nuts are on too tight.?

It could be a ball joint yet usually its not the real cause. Ball joints go in a circular motion, not saying it couldnt be, but usually its a tie-rod end on the outer side. Some dont have to be replaced because they can be greased with zerk fitings. Yet others are close tie-rod ends and they will need to be replaced. Its not a hurt on the car if its only a creek. Yet if you have excesive play in the tie-rod or ball joint it needs replaced and possibly realined.
