absolutely,our car used to have a locking gas cap, and we let someone barrow the car once, and forgot to give them the key to the gas tank, and well, they needed to put gas in it, so they broke (yes broke) it off.
If you really wanna gas cap, that's extra cheap, you can get one from a junk yard, or any of your friends who have broken down cars.
But we drove for over a year (after which the car got towed, and we never had enough money to get it out) with out a gas cap. I almost forgot there was supposed to be one on there, until I put gas in my friend's car.

People commonly stuff a rag in the opening until they can get the right cap. This helps a little to curb evaporation. Get a replacement as soon as possible. The cost is minimal compared to the cost you could lose in evaporation over a day.

as long as cant no water or dirt get into the tank ..yes you can their is a little flap in there anyway and most cars have a door over the tank fill anyway it wont hurt I drove one for years without a cap
