Yeah, thats right. You have a high pressure pump for the injectors and a low pressure pump known as a LIFT pump which assists the high pressure pump, and its generally in the fuel tank like I said!!

Maybe. Your best bet is to follow the inlet fuel line from the high pressure pump which will eventually lead you to the lift pump. It may lead you to the fuel filter first.

If you do get as far as the fuel tank then look inside the vehicle directly above the fuel tank for an access panel or small cover which may, when removed, give you access to the top of the tank, otherwise its a big YES for dropping the tank which is a pain!!
