Why does my car make this noise?

Question:
after i start it, it makes this loud skreaching sound. it ussually stops when i get going around 15 mph. but it does a little sometimes when i shift. i live in wisconsin and its cold here, it does it worse when its real cold out, til it warms up. then not so much. please help. my car is a little ford escort gt its a manual trans.
