My car wouldn't start and when it did smoke came out the exhaust.Do I need to get it checked?

Question:
When i first tried to start it it just made a stuttering sound, a bit like it does when you normally start the engine but it wouldnt actually start. I did this a few times but I gave up and left it. I tried about an hour later and this time I tried putting my foot on the gas and the engine started. However, for a second, a big cloud of black smoke came out of the exhaust but it drove quite well. I thought it was ok but when I was on the motorway I thought I could feel it rumbling a bit. Does anyone have an ideas as to what it is?

roller cams?

Probably it got damp and unburned fuel collected in the cylinders and exhaust and burned when the engine finally started.
It sounds like you need the ignition system serviced, new plugs, rotor arm Distributor cap and possibly plug leads, a garage with a Crypton Tuner and a skilled operator can identify which of these items is the primary problem, otherwise changing them all is cheaoer that a Crypton Tune, I presume the car is not old enough to have "points".
However it seems to be misfiring at motorway speeds so get it checked before a build up of unburned fuel ruins you catalytic converted, either stopping it working or in an extreme case exploding, the cat sort of blows apart, very frightening, and if you have not the presence of mind to drive away very fast the flames set the underbody seal on the car ablaze and your car burns out.

To give a true diagnosis of this problem you need to supply a good deal more information about the car such as, what car is it, how old, how many miles has it done, and is it petrol or diesel. From what you describe about a lot of smoke on start up, the usual cause of this is valve stem rubbers worn and needs changing. What happens here is while the engine is standing idle the oil in the rocker cover seeps down through the worn rubbers which means you have excess oil on the pistons, when the engine starts this is burned away and then the engine runs cleaner with less smoke.

Black smoke is fuel. It might have gotten flooded. Just keep a watch on it, it should be okay if not check your plugs.

what happens if you put diesel fuel in a gas engine?

yOU DEFINITELY FLOODED THE ENGINE AND THEN THE EXCESS FUEL WAS BURNT AND CAUSED SMOKE. ONE WAY OF AVOIDING THIS, ESPECIALLY WITH BIGGER ENGINED CARS, IS TO NEVER STOP THE ENGINE QUICKLY AFTER STARTING IT FROM COLD. ITS IMPORTANT TO LET THE ENGINE WARM UP (NEEDLE GOES OFF COLD) BEFORE SWITCHING ENGINE OFF, PREFERABLY GO FOR A RUN FOR FOR A FEW MIUTES. ITS A COMMON PROBLEM. ALSO, IT MIGHT BE WORTH GETTING YOUR OIL CHECKED/CHANGED BECAUSE THIS CAN CAUSE PETROL TO ENTER THE OIL IN THE ENGINE WHICH IS V. BAD FOR THE ENGINE AND CAN BE DANGEROUS. You've discovered that putting your foot to floor when starting a flooded engine locks off the fuel pump, so doesn't make the excess fuel situation worse. That's the way to get it going in this case. Don't do that when starting normally from cold though.

How do i change the headlight on a 1999 Ford Mondeo?

You don't mention anything about the car (make, model) but it could have been damp; or you may have a problem with the carboretta or throttle control unit which will have an effect on the exhaust. I had a similar problem with an old fiesta of mine.
If it happens again I would take it to a garage.
