Question:
I have a Ford 98 Explorer it has stopped working and my snap on scanner Mt2500 is telling me that code 1260 'Theft detected, disabled engine' is showing on the scanner. I have run this test through the Vin no. application on the scanner, I have tried to clear the code but no prevail.
Why is it important to warm up our car before we drive it?
I am getting spark and i have hooked the fuel pump up hot so the throttle body is getting fuel but it still won't start.
I also tried disconnecting the batter for 24 hours with hopes that the code went away this did no work either.

I have the original Key in the ignition and the Theft light flashes quickly as if it was a bad key or trying to be stolen. The Key is orginial from Ford and only one i Have. I was also wondering if anyon knows if these keys go bad. Or if anyone knows the proper name for the ring inside the steering column of key insertion that sends the signal to the PCM.

Well, the code P1260 indicates that the pcm does not recognize the key. Either the key has failed(it has a small transmitter inside it, and they do fail sometimes) or the transciever(sensor ring is bad). the first thing that I would look for is some kind of aftermarket remote starter junk under the dash and remove it if it is there, the next thing to do is remove the steering wheel covers and make sure the ring around where the ignition cylinder goes thru is plugged in and looks ok, other than that, you are probably looking to tow it to a dealer for repairs.Hope it helps....

Do you have a spare key for this vehicle? The keys are embeded with a micro chip which does sometimes fails. If the second key also fails you have a problem with the PAT's (passive anti theft)system and willl need to replace the GEM (generic electronics module) module and have it flash programmed with all of your keys.
