When/why did they stop putting "points" in cars? I'd always heard the phrase "plugs and points" growing up.

Question:
I'm assuming this has to do with electronic ignitions? Exactly what did "points" do?

Answers:

What is the BMW's part number equivalent to 7852 601 174 061?

points do the same thing as the electronic ignition does except the electronic ignition usually doesn't wear out and I think 1974 is when most auto makers did away with points. The reason they did away with points is when the points burned down it would change your timing on the engine where the electronic ignition doesn't burn down and your timing stays the same all the time and it gives off a lot hotter spark to the plugs.
