Check the owners manual, there should be a procedure there or call your local dealer they should tell you how to reset. If you disconnect the battery your internal computer will loose all it settings and may take a while for the vehicle to run correctly. Not serious but a nuisance.i own a repair shop,and on a 96 model you cant clear the computer off by removing the battery cable from it,,it has t be cleared with a scanner,,you can take it bu auto zone,and they will do this for free,and they can also tell you if it has any more trouble codes in it,,that might cause the light to come on,,good luck hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

DISCONNECTING the battery DOES NOT turn off the check engine light...... this will not clear the codes out of the computer.... it is an old myth. You have to hook up a code reader and see what the problem is, could be sensors or anything. you need to take it to a qualified repair facility to make sure what it is that you need to have done...done.they'll explain everythingto you.if they don't when asked get a 2nd & 3rd opinion before you get ripped off..remember they're here to serve you..it's your car....any more problems i have details as to what it is and what to have done...depending. so get answers 1st and get it checked before you dump money into it blindly & guessingly.
It could be something as minor as a vacuum leak under hard acceleration or it could be a spark plug misfire. the light could go out after driving for a few miles, ( my PT Cruiser did that because of Number 3 spark plug misfire). If the light stays lit it merely means that the computer detected a fault and probably not major. It it keeps flashing, then you need to get it looked at as soon as possible, like right now.
