If the whining is in every gear , you have a collapsed gearbox mainshaft bearing , at a guess i would say the rear one , but being in this moden throw away world there are very few mechs that could strip it and replace the bearing , i would plump for a breakers second hand one if you dont want it to cost you a fortune , labour would be about £150 ,s/h box depending what car from £60 upwardssmall car called something like axi?? any idea?
