I own a maruti suzuli baleno, manuel transmission, year 2000, done 40000km. I have noticed that the rpm varies between 500 to 1600 in neutral positions on various days. Please advice

This is normal. The engine changes how fast it idles to suit it's needs (warming up, running with the A/C on, ect). This is done by a solinoid called the "Idle Air Control" that the computer opens and closes to vary idle speed.
