My 96 grand am 3.1?

Question:
I just installed a new timing chain and gears in my grand am 3.1 because the timing was bad. I did everything correctly. The car started for about 5 seconds then died and won't start at all now.( it is cranking) It acts as if it wants to start, it just won't. ( no encoded keys incase you wondered aka chips in keys ) Could the thieft system be preventing it from starting? Any advice would be great.

oil pressure drops!?

I have a lot of further questions about this. I don't understand how or why "the timing was bad" as these motors are not timed except for the valve timing when the gears and chain are installed. All the timing is handled by the ignition module at start up and then the PCM while running. I am assuming the motor was not damaged by severely worn out chain/gears. If the gears and chain were installed correctly, and that's a big if as only the person that did it knows for sure and there is no way to check it for absolutely sure unless it is apart, the motor should have started immediately. If the motor started and stalled after about 5 seconds and seemed to run fairly well when it was running, I suspect something else is wrong. Yes, the security system could be the cause. This should also involve the security warning light flashing or staying on constantly. Hooking a Tech2 scanner to this will tell you this is the problem. If it is, you only have to program the system again as the memory was lost when the power was taken away during the chain replacement. My impression is it is not this. It sounds like the chain and gears were put on 180 degrees out. That is, installing the gears with the marks or dots together rather than both pointing up. This would cause the valve timing to be out 180 degrees as there is also a cam sensor that enables sequential injection once the motor starts from the crankshaft sensor signal. I know this sounds stupid, but when you think about it the ignition system fires both running mates at the same time in multi-port injection and then switches to sequential or the firing order after the initial start-up. (Waste spark) This has no affect on the ignition system, but the injectors will now be firing wrong. Without any further diagnosis information, that's the best I can do.

this dumb car..?

get a honda

escort si no side or back lights?

pull the dist cap to make sure the distributor is turning when you crank it. if so, check for spark on # 1 cylinder. if so check fuel supply.

97 Ford Taurus, engine won't shift over into next gear after 30 mph when driving, what's the problem? Help

Did you hook up the fuel system? Is the firing order correct? Are the spark plug and coil wires connected in the right order? Check for spark, fuel and air. Just exactly what made you replace the timing chain and gears? Did the chain break? Could be you've got damaged valve train.

does anyone know what vehicle the vented disc brakes on my LDV Convoy are off?

If you got that timing belt off 1 notch it will do that. You might have to go back and recheck it

I Need a new Hood for my car and a front grill. How much does that cost probably?

It sounds as if the timing is off. I know you say everything is right, but maybe the wires are crossed, the timing chain is off one tooth, or something external was left unplugged. (if it started and died, chances are the fuel injector plug was not plugged back in and the leftover gas burned out) Here is what to do......first check and see if you have spark. Then check and see if you have fuel. If you need to take a few spark plugs out and shoot some WD 40 down in there and replace the plugs. See if it runs for a couple more seconds. Then you know if you have a spark or fuel problem. If you have spark, and if you spray fuel and it doesn't change anything, then for sure something is unplugged or the timing is off. GOOD LUCK! ps, don't buy a honda......they are crap. Your 3.1 is an excellent motor.

Can the Tcc or torque converter solenoid stop a 1990 Lesabre from starting if it was bad?

You wouldn't get that trouble with a Honda.

annoying car trouble?

As Gleb S & Max said GET A HONDA, years & years of trouble free motoring. gin and juice certified? sure by men in white coats and shrinks. Hondas ALWAYS come top in the polls. they claimed 1st-2nd-3rd, in the Powers poll. beat that.

why is the heater in my mini cooper only pumping out cold air?

Its unlikely its the anti theft system, particularly if it wants to start. It’s the timing I'm sure, recheck it.... If you can get it on an analyser then so much the better.

i need a light for my truck?

Is the security light flashing?

is there any surprises when fitting alfa romeo brake pads?

It's hard to believe you had to change the timing chain on a 3.1. I'll bet you have a different problem that still exists, and it was not the chain.

Why am I getting a code reading for a part that is not installed on my 1993 GMC Sonoma pickup ?

does it have a chain of belt?if your off just 1 tooth then it wont start.check the timing.if its got a belt, put it on top dead center and see if the cam is off.you should have a guage hole in the cam sproket.put something like a drill bit in the hole(to keep the cam from turning and make sure the crank is at 0 on the scale and slip the belt on the cam, after you loosen the tensioner, then adjust the belt,so it will flex half turn, then tighten the tensioner.sounds to me like it slipped with you when you put the belt on the cam.also the chain might be off 1 tooth too.(if its got a chain)good luck.
