Should I anticipate any problems after re-installing a thermostat that was put in backwards?

My 1991 Mazda Miata was over-heating but not red-lining for quite awhile. Come to find out the thermostat was installed backwards. will installing it properly correct the problem? ( I'm in another state so haven't been able to test it out.)

to be safe I would just go buy another thermostat and install it, 9 times out of 10 there would be nothing wrong with the thermostat that was reversed but why have to do the job twice if there is something wrong with it.
