Small little question for you mechanics out there...?

It sounds like the connection from the gage to a.c. line isnt good, because if it had 0 pressure the compressor wouldnt come on.I am assuming this ford came standard with 134a and has orfice tube, not expansion valve. If it is that old and has exp. valve, compressor will engage with 0 pressure.

Trouble starting truck?

My first thought is that you either a) are hooking up to the wrong port, b)have a big leak, or c) you have a blockage someplace. I'd check all lines, fittings, and seals. I'd also suggest taking it to an A/C specialist who can test it with a form of gaseous "dye" that will show where any leaks are located. Hope this info helped.

Mechanic please!?

you either have a very bad leak,or a plugged line also be very careful doing this your self .I knew of a few cases where people got killed from back pressure blowing the can up because of being hooked up wrong.
