My BMW 3 series 1.6 i 1998, has a leaky differential (apparantly) what is the work invlolved to fix it & cost?

Question:
It is not at all noisy but has some oily fluid around the diff but it is not dripping on the drive at all. I am trying to sell it and a guy is trying to knock me on the price because of this ?

It may just be gear oil that was spilled on the diff housing when it was serviced last time. If it's leaking it will drip. If it isn't dripping I doubt it's a serious problem. Even if it does leak, it doesn't matter so much as long as the fluid loss is kept under control (keep topping it up).

Leaks are often due to the shaft seal. Changing a shaft seal will require draining the oil from the differential, and removing the axle shaft that goes through the seal (this will involve dismantling a part of the suspension on one side). The shaft seal is probably a $5 part, with maybe an hour or so of labor.

Personally I think the guy is trying to lowball you. Take your car to one of those DIY car washes, and pressure wash the underside of your car.
