Is a rebuilt motor just as good and/or reliable as a brand new motor?

Question:
I know that after a while some people get the motor of their cars rebuilt. So, I was wondering if a rebuilt motor is just as reliable as a brand new motor. And, what exactly do they do when they rebuild a motor? Not that I am going to rebuild a motor any time soon, I just was curious.

Answers:

My passenger side window wont come up all the way?

Generally no. The rebuild companies only do the minimum. They are trying to make a profit at the end of the day. I am not saying the rebuilt engine is going to be bad but just not as good as new.

what's good about rebuilding something for yourself is that you have total control over the quality and style of parts. you can use roller rockers, titanium valve seats, radical cams...only limited to how much you want to spend really.

A scratch is starting to rust, how do i stop/ fix it?

Generally speaking an rebuilt as mentioned above can be better. but if your paying a budjet company to build a budjet motor then that is what you'll get CHEAP... the cheapest parts and the cheapest way to install..
unless you go to a machine shop that does proformance engines or better than factory...stick to a factory rebuilt with it's warranty.

How can I install my car's window regulator?

yes a rebuilt motore are as good, but u want to get the block pressure tested for cracks and leaks, and make sure all ur components like cam, crank ,pistons, amdpiston rods and rockers, and rollers, pushrods, valves and rings are new and for the specific engine. i would get the heads and the intake tested. i would probably replace everything for the engine if u had the money to save a heartache

How often should you change the oil in your car?

a rebuilt motor can be as good, it depends on the machining equipment that the rebuild shop has. the closer the measurement and the flatter the deck the better. and what they do is dissasemble your engine, remove the pistons and crank, wash em off. machine the cylinder head and block. they will check to see if your cylinder walls are scored up. if so they will make the cylinders a little bigger and put new pistons in to match the new size. if the walls are ok then they willl probably just clean them up with a wierd looking brush and perhaps use your old pistons. its all a matter of what you want to spend. theyll probably give you a rebuilt head and use yours as a core, slap it all together for you and paint ugly spots with metal colored paint. thats it in a nutshell.

93 Geo Metro manual won't shift into 5th gear. Why?

usually, they replace all the worn out parts, but then new is new , right. the best to get would be a ''crate'', engine, comes from the factory, and u can install it. and they're not really all that much.

My 2000 ford ranger starts vibrating at 60 miles per hour or higher, but it quits when I let off the pedal?

It all depends on the rebuilder. Late model engines are built to very close, exacting tolerances. If the rebuilder has the equipment and expertise to maintain those tolerances, it should last as long as the original. All machined surfaces must be checked, and re-machined if any variance is found. All moving parts are replaced, except crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft and valves, which are re-machined. Sometimes they need to be replaced if they are worn beyond repair.

What is a cold air intake? is this an intake? jwt pop charger? http://www.importpartspro.com/jwtpopcharger.htm

a re built motor is sometimes better than stock just because a good mechanic will go through everything like new crank, new rods, new pistons and new camshaft. line bore all the holes in the block and micro polish every journal.
so the engine is tighter than a new engine because the car makers put out 100s of engines a day and only check 1 of 10 maybe.
if you rebuild your engine don't get cheap parts and don't skimp out. get every part for the engine down to the last bolt. and recheck every thing as you go. that's is why if i want a rebuilt engine i do it myself not some shop were you cant see what they are doing to it. For the big stuff i have a machine shop do.
