Where's the best place to get my brakes checked?

I need to get my brakes checked and I'm wondering where would be the best place. Should I try a place like Midas or the car dealership? Where does everyone normally go for a brake checkup? I'm trying to avoid being ripped off.

If you take it to the dealership they will charge you for just taking off the tires. Not to mention checking the brakes. Just take it to a local shop and they will check them for free.
